Homework FAQs
Which platforms do students use to complete their homework?
At Nuneaton Academy, students complete compulsory amounts of homework through the "Sparx Maths" and "Sparx Reader" platforms. Sparx Maths focuses on mastery through regular personalised maths practice, while Sparx Reader focuses on developing reading fluency, comprehension, and reading habits through structured independent reading. Significantly, both allow students to develop the independent study habits necessary for long-term academic success.
How frequently do students need to complete their homework?
Students must complete their Sparx Maths and Reader homework every week.
How much homework do students need to complete?
Sparx Maths and Reader have weekly allocated amounts. If properly engaged with, this typically equates to between 90-150 minutes of Sparx homework per week in total (approximately 15-20 minutes per day).
When is Sparx homework due?
Sparx homework is due for all year groups every Wednesday by 8am.
What homework support is available in school?
Students can speak to their teachers throughout the week to seek support. A dedicated and resourced space is also provided before school, during social times, and after school every day in the Library.
What happens if my child does not complete their homework on time?
If a student has not completed both their Sparx Maths and Reader homework by its weekly due date on more than one occasion per term, an internal exclusion will be applied. During this time, students will complete any missed homework.
What happens if my child repeatedly fails to complete their homework on time?
If a student repeatedly fails to complete their homework on time and has already had two internal exclusions related to this behaviour, an increased sanction will apply. This may include cluster or fixed term suspensions, as appropriate for any repeated failure to meet expectations.
My child has an SEN. Do they still have to complete homework?
In most cases, students with an SEN will still need to complete homework. If a student has a literacy-based SEN, an email can be sent to the SENCo, who will decide on a case-by-case basis whether a reasonable adjustment to the amount required can be made. Email emma.wright@nuneatonacademy.org.uk for further information.
What should I do if I believe my child has a valid reason not to have completed their homework?
If you believe there is a valid reason for your child not to complete their homework in a certain week, please email ilham.nasseri@nuneatonacademy.org.uk before the homework is due for submission. Please note that unauthorised absences from school or focusses on other commitments (such as sports’ clubs) are not considered valid reasons.
My child already reads at home/is good at maths and English. Why should they have to complete Sparx homework?
Regular completion of Sparx Maths and Reader has benefits that go far beyond their connection to the curriculum or the numeracy and literacy skills they help to build. Completing assignments on a regular schedule encourages time management, organisation, and responsibility – skills that are important in all walks of life. Homework also encourages independence, in the sense that it helps students learn how to work through challenges on their own before seeking help when needed.
