Literacy at Nuneaton Academy
Literacy is at the heart of everything we do at Nuneaton Academy. Students have Form Time Reading every week and the Library is stocked with exciting books that students can access at break, lunchtime and after school.
Oracy, vocabulary, reading and writing skills are embedded into the curriculum and taught explicitly in all lessons. Literacy across the whole school is tested multiple times each year so that we have a detailed picture of how every student is making progress.
Any student that is not meeting the required literacy levels for them to access the curriculum successfully, will be placed into intervention groups depending on their need. This could be a 6 week block, or a rolling literacy programme across the year.
We have a dedicated Director of Literacy, a Reading Intervention Officer and a Librarian, all of whom facilitate interventions so as many students can access them as necessary.
We encourage students to enjoy reading by offering a fully-stocked Library space, with new books arriving throughout the year, books to take home and magazines to browse. Students are also able to use laptops at break, lunch and after school to complete their homework.
